Gutters and roofs · Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Water on the basement wall, a gutter pulling away from the board, ice along the eaves. Walk the house in the next rain, check five things, and you'll know if it needs a cleaning, a repair or new gutters.

The five-minute gutter test
You don't need a ladder. Pick a day with steady rain, or run a hose along the roof edge, and stand on the ground. Answer yes or no.
It should run along the gutter to the downspout. Water over the edge means the gutter is clogged, too small for the roof above it, or has lost an end cap.
Sectional gutters leak where the pieces meet. One dripping corner is a repair. Drips along the whole run mean the seams have aged out.
Look along the run from the end of the house. A belly in the middle or a gap at the fascia means loose hangers or soft wood behind it.
Water should leave the house and not stand against the wall. A puddle or a splash mark on the siding means a short or broken downspout.
Water that gets behind the gutter rots the board it hangs on. Soft wood gets fixed before any new gutter goes up.
None: leave them alone and clear them in fall. One or two: ask for a repair. Three or more, or a yes on the fascia: ask for a written estimate on new seamless gutters. If cleaning is all it needs, we'll say so.

Six-inch gutters, extra downspouts, fascia repair and hard-to-reach walls are priced on your estimate.
Ice at the eaves
Heat leaks up into the attic and melts the snow on the warm part of the roof. The water runs down and freezes at the cold edge. The gutter is where you see it first.
A gutter can't cause that, and a heat cable only keeps a channel open while the cause stays put. We look at the gutters and the attic on the same visit, and tell you which problem is which.
Seal and insulate the attic floor
Keep air moving from the soffit to the ridge
Steam off ice that's already there; never chip it

What we do

Formed on site to the length of your run, with hidden hangers and downspouts sized to the roof above.
Gutter materials
Cleared, flushed, re-sealed and rehung, with a photo of what we found in the gutter.
What we repair
Extensions and elbows that carry the water well away from the wall and the cellar.
The gutter test
The board behind the gutter, replaced where the wood has gone soft, before new gutters hang on it.
Services
Shingle or metal, and the gutters in the same visit so the roof edge is done once.
Roof replacement
A lifted flashing, a bad boot, a few shingles. We say when a repair is enough.

From the neighbors
“They walked the whole yard before they quoted. The machine shed got its own gutters, and the downspouts now run out past the lilac and not into the cellar wall.”
“I thought I needed a new roof for the leak. Luc found a lifted flashing at the chimney, fixed it and told me the shingles had some years left.”
“Blia sent Bjorn and Luc to look at the attic as well. The gutters were fine and the attic was the trouble. They said so and wrote it up.”
“The estimate showed every foot of gutter and what each downspout cost. It was easy to set next to the other two quotes.”

Questions
Seamless gutters are formed from one piece of metal on site, so they have no seams to leak along the run. Sectional gutters come in lengths that join with seams, and the seams are where they fail first.
Five-inch is the usual size. A big roof, a long valley or heavy tree cover can call for six-inch. We size it to the roof above it and write the size on your estimate.
Yes. Most of our calls are gutters alone: new runs, repairs, cleaning, downspouts and the board behind them.
No. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic. A gutter only shows where the ice builds. The ice dam page explains the fixes.
That's between you and your insurer, and you decide whether to file. We write an itemized estimate you can share with them. We are not public adjusters, and the deductible is yours to pay.
